Why is it important to save snakes?

Hello there, Welcome back!

In today's blog, i am going to discuss on a topic that is most important for people to know. By understanding this, i may not guarantee to remove the fear of snakes that you may have but, i am sure that you will start observing snakes from a different perspective.

We all know that snakes are definitely not everybody's favorite animal. Within ourselves we fear snakes with an understanding that the snake will bite us and we will die. But this misconception towards snake is going to change after this blog.

Snakes are carnivores in nature and their favorite prey is rodents (in general) chicken eggs, cats, birds, lizards and other small animals. They have no intentions to harm any human being. Snakes are defensive in behavior (meaning: They defend themselves to protect their life) Just like human beings. Snakes bite or inject venom as their last resort only when they feel threatened or cornered by someone.

Studies shows that approximately 50,000 people in India die every year due to snake bite but, there is no data that shows how many snakes are killed in retaliation. As per reports, Human-Snake conflict is one of India's largest Man-Animal conflict.

So why snakes needs to be conserved? Why are they important?
Here are 3 points to answer the question:

1. Snakes are an important part of our food chain because they act as predator as well as a prey.  Below is a basic food chain example:

2. Close to about 40% of the grains cultivated by farmers are eaten away by rodents and snakes help the farmers by controlling the rodent population (so next time remember that earthworms are not only farmers best friend but, even snakes are)

3. The venom produced by the snake are used in life saving Anti-Snake venom (ASV's) in case of Snake Bite to a person.

So, now you know why we need to conserve and protect snakes! Hope this blog helped you understand the importance of snakes in our surroundings. Next time you see a snake around either leave the snake on itself or call a professional snake rescuer who will safely rescue and relocate the snake to a safer habitat.
